The Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC) community is deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of Professor Jean Forst on April 8, 2025. A dedicated educator and mentor, Jean’s contributions over her 13-year tenure have left an indelible mark on both the institution and its students.
A Commitment to Education
Jean’s academic journey began at Northern Illinois University, where she studied Business and Commerce from 1987 to 1989. Her passion for teaching led her to roles at Joliet Junior College between 2009 and 2012, and at the University of Illinois from August 1992 to May 2005. In August 2011, she joined IVCC as a full-time professor, dedicating nearly 14 years to fostering a love for English and reading among her students. Her commitment was evident through her accessible office hours and her emphasis on continuous learning, often quoting Maya Angelou: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
Advocacy and Community Involvement
Beyond her academic roles, Jean was an active member of the Zonta Club of LaSalle-Peru Area, an organization dedicated to empowering women through service and advocacy. Her involvement showcased her dedication to community service and her commitment to advancing the status of women in the Illinois River Valley.
Remembering Jean
Jean’s sudden departure has left a void in the hearts of many. Her sister, Laura Forst Hesslau, expressed profound grief:
“I can’t even believe I’m writing this. My beautiful sister and best friend in the entire world passed away on Tuesday unexpectedly. I am crushed. She was my touchstone. We shared a bedroom while growing up and in our 20’s shared an apartment in Chicago. Our love for animals bonded us in a way I can’t describe. She was my person. I talked to her every single day and I just can’t believe I’ll never talk to her again. Jean, my dear sister, I love you! You will be in my heart forever! Rest easy dear sissie.”
The Zonta Club of LaSalle-Peru Area also mourned her loss, stating:
“It is with much shock and sorrow that we say goodbye to our beloved friend Dr. Jean Forst, member extraordinaire of the Zonta Club of LaSalle-Peru Area. We wanted many more years of love and friendship, Jean.”
Legacy and Impact
Jean’s dedication to education and her students was unwavering. Her colleagues at IVCC remember her as a passionate educator who inspired both students and peers. Her commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment and her advocacy for women’s empowerment have left lasting impressions on the community.
